HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE
Dr. Mautner began attending the annual convention of the American Acadamy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), (a group composed mostly of physicians treating sleep disorders), over 12 years ago.
At that time the overall recommendations for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea was
- CPAP first,
- surgery if CPAP unsuccessful,
- then behavioral changes,
- then there are some oral appliances out there but they don't work.*
*Dr. Mautner voiced his disagreement but he was the voice of one dentist in a sea of a thousand physicians. (In their defense the scientific evidence just wasn't in about oral appliances at that time.)
2006
In 2006 the AASM, the same organization, released a position paper stating Oral Appliance Therapy should be our first line of treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
All scientific evidence leads to the conclusion Oral Appliance therapy is the most successful method of treating OSA.
